How did Liberty get its name?
In September of 1974 this school - that was named Benicia Opportunity School – became Liberty High School – here is what it says in the Benicia Herald Article – thought you might enjoy this!!
The 39 students at the Opportunity School have been meeting regularly as a group, decided in their meetings to form a student body, and during these meetings also decided to give the school a positive identity by renaming the school. Several names were nominated and after lengthy discussion and thought the name “Liberty” was chosen. As told to the Board in his presentation, Student Body President Jeff Wallace outlined the following reasons for requesting the name change:
“LIBERTY to us means the freedom to learn as you are able, but not to be forced; therefore the responsibility of our education rests on our shoulders, no one else’s
“LIBERTY also means to us the freedom to look and act as individuals, not necessarily following a particular image
The name LIBERTY comes from something meaningful in our country’s history – the basic rights of all people as stated in the Declaration of Independence – Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
LIBERTY is especially meaningful to us because each student has the opportunity to pursue his personal educational interests”
Upon hearing Mr. Wallace’s presentation a resolution to rename Benicia Opportunity School to Liberty High was unanimously affirmed by the Board!!
